If you aren’t sure what hygge means my post from last year explains it – head here to read it and this book is a great resource. In a nutshell when you think of hygge – think of cozy spaces with the warmth of candles, intentional and natural lighting, elements of nature and comfortable spaces. Imagine a roaring fire, flickering candle and a fuzzy cozy blanket – all so cozy and hygge.
This is exactly what I think of when I think of cozy and hygge. Your interpretation may be different and that’s ok! On a side note I shot these pictures before we diy’d our fireplace mantel – you can see the after on my Instagram and I’ll have a blog post soon for you about it. I really wanted to show you how you can decorate around a “work in progress” or design challenge.
Sometimes we don’t have the exact idea yet of what we want to accomplish or we have a budget to keep in mind and can’t complete a project right away. I love to show progress because sometimes that is just the reality! But progress doesn’t always mean you have to look at or have something in your space that is super awkward or unappealing! See more in my tips and how I decorated around our unfinished mantel below. And now here are my overall tips for cozy and hygge living.
Add Cozy Candles
I love adding pretty candles for extra coziness and warmth. My new favorite candle that has the most subtle scent is from a local San Diego company. You can shop their candles here. The scent smells amazing yet it is subtle and not overwhelming – plus I love supporting local businesses – especially when they are environmentally conscience! These candles are made all natural with soy and the glass is from recycled wine bottles – how cool is that?!
I also love adding votives to lanterns for a warm glow. You can create a hygge feel using these gold votives. {You can shop my ottoman/bench by heading here.}
Create a Cozy Hygge Corner
Don’t forget about the nooks and corners of your room. Adding cozy elements really helps to bring a room together. This side table stacked with my favorite books, wooden beads and candle holder creates a cozy corner for reading. Slippers ready to go and another blanket handy makes curling up with a book in this little spot extra cozy.
Bring Elements of Nature Indoors for a Cozy Hygge Feel
Bringing nature into a space is one of the hallmark characteristics of a hygge cozy feel. Natural accents like greenery, logs and wood finishes add warmth to a space. You don’t have to break the bank to achieve this look! Grab some fresh greenery at your local grocery store and arrange for a natural look. I chose eucalyptus and pine clippings. You can also use a pretty faux option – shop my favs here and here.
I added real and faux greenery to our “unfinished” mantel to give it more of a finished look and to cover the unfinished elements! I love the contrast of the green against the white brick.
This faux wreath was the only thing I could hang until I have a real mantel! lol! However, I do love how it ties in all of the pretty greenery! I have my eye on this wreath – it may be a future purchase!
I love our faux fiddle leaf fig. She adds such a pop of color and height to our modern farmhouse style living room – and looks sooo real!
Adding birch logs to a woven basket adds a natural element as well. You can shop our fireplace screen by heading here.
Add Cozy Blankets Everywhere
When it is time to get cozy I always grab my favorite blanket or throw. You can see mine are extra loved – slightly worn and fuzzy – but so much better than {perfect} and not utilized that often in my book! Drape your blankets over your sofa, chairs, benches and ottomans so they are readily accessible for snuggling and getting cozy!
Let the Natural Light Shine In
There is nothing like the warmth and glow of natural light in a space. Keep your windows open and airy with curtains that allow natural light to flow in…white, linen curtains are such a great option. If you lack natural light in a space add a mirror to reflect light around the room. A mirror will give the illusion that there is more space and light!
Hygge + Cozy Elements In One Space
I’m leaving you with this last picture – it encompasses all that I’ve shared for a cozy, hygge modern farmhouse style living room. Cozy corners, natural sunlight and elements from nature mixed with readily accessible soft fuzzy blankets and throws and a warm roaring fire. I hope you are inspired to bring some of these cozy and hygge elements into your home.
