How to Update Your Dining Room: Simple Tricks + Tips

Simple Design Tips

The main trick with updating any space in your home is tapping into your creative energy. Move things around from other rooms shopping your home first and then deciding what items you would like to update.

When you update a space you don’t have to start from scratch and get rid of everything. I realized that it was time to update our chandelier and chairs so that was my focus. Keeping my table and bench was a priority because they work for us.

If something isn’t working for you and your family and your space for sure make that a priority. Style + function are always a priority for me and always recommend that in my posts and on IG.

Dining Room Update: Simple Tricks + Tips

1. What’s Working/What’s Not

Make note of what is working in your dining room and what’s not. For example, do you have enough seating for everyone and enough space to enjoy a meal. By figuring out what works and what’s not working you can make more intentional choices about the items you purchase.

2. Make a Design Plan

You don’t have to be a professional designer to make a design mood board. I simply take screen shot images of the items I like and then place them on a Power Point slide. Or you can even place them on a Word doc. Doesn’t have to be fancy. It will give you the visual idea of how the items you are selecting will flow together.

For example I knew a brass chandelier would fit perfectly and flow nicely next to our glass globe brass pendants in our kitchen. If I wasn’t certain I could place them next together on a mood board to see. I also did this with our new dining room chairs. I wanted to make sure they would compliment our dining room table.

3. Make Sure to Measure

This is sooo crucial – make sure to always measure. With a chandelier it’s always easier to buy one that has flexibility with height for adjustments since ceiling heights can vary. One of the many reasons I love our new chandelier – the length is adjustable!

We have 8′ ceilings so removing one of the rods was necessary for the perfect height and it was so easy to do this! You also want to consider scale of your lighting and how it coordinates with your table. The design of our new brass chandelier is so versatile it goes with a rectangular table and round table. 4. Update Key Items for the Biggest Impact: Lighting + Chairs

Items that make the biggest impact in updating a dining room are the lighting, table and definitely the chairs. The best way to update your lighting is to consider the style of your light bulb. For our new chandelier I chose this light bulb for a more modern look. As far as our dining room chairs I love our black chairs (a set of 2 is only around $80!!) but I have my heart on these chairs that come in multiple colors – I’d love white. They should be arriving soon so I’ll share an updated picture on my IG feed when they arrive so stay tuned. Chairs + lighting can change the entire look of your dining room!

5. Dining Room Accessories for a Finished Touch

Don’t forget to finish off the dining room space. Adding pretty frames, artwork, photos and dishware make any dining room feel cozy, pretty and welcoming. I’ve rounded up several options for you below!
